Friends of the Madison County Public Library 2002 Annual Meeting

The Friends of the Madison County Public Library attending the 2002 annual meeting on Sunday elected officers and board members for the next year. Officers elected were: Jack Moody, president; Eileen Lear, vice president; Dr. Howard Thompson, secretary; and Lois Morgan, treasurer.

Board Members elected were: Mary Black, Connie Brosi, Tina Ricketts, Susie Heil, Marilyn Hungarland, June Jones, Dr. Glen and Joan Kleine, Susan Morton, Carol Rogow, Judy Singleton, Barbara Taylor and Eunice Thompson

Jack Moody reported at the meeting that since January, 2002 the Friends of the Madison County Public Library have contributed more than $20,000 to the library in various ways. He said $11,00 was spent on a new circulation desk for the Richmond facility, an Owl mascot costume, two new book trucks, two bulletin boards, booster seats for the Berea facility, financial support was given for the Summer Reading Program, and $500 was given to support the recent Halloween party sponsored at both facilities.

The owl, which was donated by the Friends to the library, made a guest appearance at the annual meeting.

Sue Hays, Director of the Madison County Public Library, expressed her appreciation for the work and contribution of the Friends group. She said annual circulation is now at 300,000 which has increased by 2 per cent each year. She said the library is increasing both its book collection as well as enhancing its CD and DVD collection. She said the goal of the library was to have a holding of 2 books per Madison County resident. She said the rate currently is 1.5 book per resident. Hays further indicated that her goal is to put the library holdings on line so that residents with computers could see what holdings were available.

Following the organizational and library reports awards were given to individuals for their contributions of time and talent to the library.

The principal awards were:

Jack Moody (left), president of the Friends of the Madison County Public Library, gave the Friend of the Year for 2002 Award to Dr. Howard Thompson while the Madison County Public Library Owl mascot looked on. Thompson was recognized in particular for his work in helping the Friends obtain and his work in maintaining a used bookmobile which is used to sell used books. The name of the vehicle is fondly referred to by the Friends as BUB (Bookmobile - Used Books). Used book sales from BUB, which alternates monthly between Berea and Richmond and occasionally goes elsewhere, such as the Berea Spoonbread Festival, has been a steady source of income for the Friends.

Jane Harris was given an appreciation award for her service to the library. She was particularly recognized for her leadership role in the development of the new library building. She was unable to attend the meeting.

Lois Morgan accepted a certificate on behalf of herself and her husband Jim Morgan who have given approximately 100 of volunteer hours in the Berea facility

Also given awards for substantial numbers of volunteer hours were Beverly Andrews, Amanda Camerin, Keisha Hart, Jim Morgan. Lois Morgan, Heather Rogers and Carol Rogow.

Following the annual meeting refreshments were served.
